Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis)

For a long time I’ve wanted to see these giants up close, and Pantanal is perhaps the best place to see them.

This is the first group I encountered, as they were hunting. This river is wide and powerful, with lots of dense vegetation along the banks, so seeing them was not easy. Photographing them a different matter entirely.

This individual is eating a cat fish.

Most of the action was covered by thickets, but occasionally there was a gap, or one or more of the otters swam out in the open for a brief moment. This is another individual eating a fish species I’ve not been able to identify yet, so any input is appreciated.

This third individual found it best to sit inside the thicket and eat in peace – away from sneaky family members looking for a free meal.
