Socotra cormorant (Phalacrocorax nigrogularis)

Two Socotra cormorants was actually unusual, as I mostly saw them in one large mass.

The Socotra cormorant (Phalacrocorax nigrogularis) is found in large numbers on the west coast of Socotra, especially around the Shuab area. A couple of times found them in a huge group fishing – that was amazing to see. No humans in sight – only a large black shape mowing around in the crystal blue ocean. Once I saw them on the beach too – equally amazing!

All the cormorant species I’ve encountered previously are solitary outside breeding season, so this is an incredibly exiting behaviour.
