Stera, Socotra

The sand dunes of Stera is on the southern coast of Socotra. It looks peaceful and inviting here, but come the southwestern monsoon, and huge waves and relentless winds batter this part of Socotra between June and September.

Even though this is shot in early February, the heat is unbearably most of the day. Fortunately the topography of Socotra provides a solution well known in India, where people move to the Himalayan hills to cool down during the hottest months of the year. Here it’s just a short drive up the hills and the temperature quickly drops to a tolerable level.
